Understanding the legal realm as a layman involves grasping the basics of law. There’s legal and then there’s lawful. The two are not always synonymous. Knowing how the system works and how it affects your everyday life is key. Common law, also known as case law, is one of the most important legal systems to understand, especially if you want to protect your rights as a private citizen.

Unlike legal systems based solely on written statutes and government codes, common law is built on judicial decisions and legal precedents, meaning, what judges have ruled in past cases often becomes the standard for future rulings.

A core principle in this system is stare decisis, which means “to stand by things decided.” This ensures that courts follow previous decisions in similar cases, creating consistency, fairness, and predictability in how laws are applied. Our Common Law course is designed to give you a basic understanding of this.
